Process Work

1. Research Scope and Objectives

Our research focuses on investigating the challenges and barriers faced by visually impaired individuals during daily walking and when using public transport in Kuala Lumpur. By identifying specific physical and informational obstacles, we aim to better understand the daily experiences of visually impaired commuters and develop inclusive design solutions that can improve accessibility and urban mobility.

2. Site Selection and Strategic Location

To collect representative and relevant data, our group conducted an on-site investigation at the rail stations around KL Sentral, which is the busiest transportation hub in Kuala Lumpur. This location was chosen as our main case study because it provides a high-density, multi-modal transit environment where we could observe and evaluate the existing guidance systems for visually impaired users.

3. Site Investigation and Observational Methodology

During the field visit, we explored the entire station area to examine the placement and effectiveness of wayfinding and accessibility features. As the person responsible for data collection, I systematically photographed guidance signage, tactile paving, and other accessible design elements throughout the site. We recorded our observations on-site and compiled a wide range of visual references to support our analysis and future design improvements. Our investigation paid particular attention to the tactile quality of Braille signs, color contrast, text legibility, font size, and the overall continuity of accessible facilities in and around the station.

4. Data Consolidation and Project Value

I successfully gathered a strong collection of field evidence, including high-resolution photographs and detailed observational notes, which will serve as important supporting materials for our presentation. By documenting these specific pain points and environmental barriers, we have established a solid evidence base for our project. This data will be highly valuable in our PPT, as it helps justify our analysis and provides a clear and factual foundation for our proposed design solutions.

Feedback

Our field study at KL Sentral was carefully planned and carried out with a strong focus on examining the wayfinding systems and accessibility features provided for visually impaired users. Through systematic on-site observation, as well as the collection of visual materials and detailed field notes, I was able to show strong research awareness and close attention to the details of inclusive design.

This stage of the project successfully connected real-world user needs with solid supporting evidence, especially through the analysis of tactile paving, Braille signage, and color contrast within the transit environment. By reflecting on the existing infrastructure in a thoughtful and critical way, our findings are grounded in the actual challenges faced by visually impaired individuals.

As a result, this research phase provides a clear and credible foundation for the project, which will directly support and strengthen our final design proposals in creating a more accessible and inclusive urban experience.

Reflection

This field study at KL Sentral gave me a deeper understanding of the real navigation experiences faced by visually impaired commuters. By carefully documenting the existing signage, Braille features, color contrast, and tactile paving on-site, I realized that effective design should be based on the actual environment and the practical needs of users, rather than relying only on theoretical assumptions.

This experience also helped me improve my observation and data collection skills. I learned how to systematically gather, organize, and record research materials in a more professional and structured way. Working closely with my team members also allowed us to complete the field investigation safely and efficiently in a busy urban setting.

Overall, this study highlighted the importance of inclusive and universal design. It also strengthened my commitment to turning our research findings into a practical and user-friendly design proposal that can better support the visually impaired community in Kuala Lumpur’s urban spaces.
